Confidentiality

The law protects the relationship between a patient/client and a psychotherapist, and information can almost never be disclosed without written permission.

In certain circumstances, the law requires a therapist to break confidentiality to protect the safety of the client and others. These include include suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse; potential homicide or serious harm to others; or risk of suicide or other self-harm.

The use of insurance for billing and payment also limits confidentiality as it requires disclosure or treatment and progress. Please review my limitations to using insurance section.

Limitations to Using Insurance

  • Diagnosis Required: You won’t have a diagnosis label permanently attached to your health record.
  • Limits to Confidentiality: Your records are protected, which means all information about you, including very personal information, cannot be obtained by the insurance company.
  • Insurance company dictates your treatment: Your care is not dictated by the insurance company, but by the collaborative efforts formed by my professional expertise and your personal preferences and goals.
  • Fewer eligible providers: Because insurance companies dictate type of care, length or care, requires diagnosis even if not appropriate, and creates limits to confidentiality; many therapists have opted out of taking insurance.
